What a difference a week makes…

This is Chouka one week ago as we were shooting pics for a new series of portraits. I was actually quite impressed  with the exuberance she showed in front of the camera that day. I was happy for her, as she is not always so animated. I was laughing at almost every frame while editing thru the photos afterwards… what a clown she was that day!

And this is Chouka exactly one week later, post surgery to remove cancer from her neck. Radical I know, in so many ways!!! All seemed fine one day, and then it all gets turned upside down the next. It practically takes your breath away!! The determination of cancer immediately sends you into a tail spin of emotions… will she survive, she is way too young, how did this come about, am I in any way responsible, how could I have prevented this, what can I do to ward this off in the future, she is just starting to come into her own… and on and on! Not to mention the intense sadness that over takes your every move!!

Chouka has been incredibly brave and humbled throughout the process, and completely void of self-pity (that’s human stuff!!)… just another day from her perspective, albeit not the best of days. I have printed out these photos rather large for myself, as a reminder to live life to its fullest each and every day, love those closest to you as if there is no tomorrow and do what is most important to you today. I am constantly learning from these amazing animals as to how to go through life on a daily basis… NOW is the only time that matters, do not dwell on the past, nor get caught up in the future, for all that exists in NOW!! I love you Chouka Bear…
